The arts have always been a tricky field to protect because not everyone in the world share the values that any individual artist might have to express. The purpose of the arts might be to uplift the human spirit, but there must also be equal place to display the less desirable emotional states and concepts such as tragedy, sorrow, rage and purely nihilistic outlooks. This is how the people of this planet learn about one another and Dede Wilsey believes that is crucial to our advancement not only as a nation, but as a species. She has taken the firm belief that art must be protected and that like the plants in her own garden, if it is carefully nurtured from day one then it will prove to be of lasting significance and benefit those who play a role in its nurturing for the rest of those people’s lives. It is a very powerful conviction Dede holds and it acts as a magnet for the funding needed to see monumental projects like the new de Young facility through to completion.

Here is a woman who is fierce and nearly vicious about the fact that a museum deserves the $200 million it takes. She gives first, millions of her own money, then sets about the San Francisco social elite community to bring others on board. Thousands of donations are added to the fund and before long, even the fact that there was no tax based support for the program means nothing. Her aggressive approach to fundraising manages to create a huge groundswell of support and the museum then becomes an impending reality rather than a mere hope for something great. Because of this tenacity and hard line approach to encouraging others to do their civic duty, Dede Wilsey can be held as a real beacon for what is possible once one person determines that good must be done despite the costs.
