Dogs are very much like children when you consider the time and effort that goes into naming them.  Dog names are just as important as choosing your pet in the first place and they are just as important.  Unfortunately, many of my friends just don’t see how important picking out the best name is, and therefore their pets have questionable names.  But, I am going to take my time to pick the perfect name for my new dog.

I thought that I would try to find some inspiration for a great name in some of the baby books they have at the library.  I realize that a dog certainly isn’t a person, but I thought that following the same steps as a new parent, I might be able to come up with something great.  But after browsing through a number of books on the shelf, it quickly became apparent that my choice of resources wasn’t all that great.  Who has ever heard of a dog named “Melissa” or “Jim” ?  Not me, and I am not about to change the dog naming conventions all on my own – I needed a better resource.

I took a quick trip across town to visit my best friend Gayle.  We have been friends for a long time, and she has had a number of dogs over that time.  I have always loved the names that she has given her puppies, and I thought that she would be the perfect person to ask.  Instead of finding the easy answer that I was looking for, she told me that I needed to think about the perfect name for my pet – no one else could do the work for me.

So, I really haven’t made any great strides at discovering the perfect dog name, but I know what I have to do.  Instead of trying to rush things, I think that I am going to sit down and let the name just come to me – that way, I know that it will be perfect and I surely cannot settle for anything less.
